The Hubble Space Telescope: what it is and why it works

Answer: Hubble is a large space-based observatory launched in 1990 that orbits about 300 miles (483 km) above Earth, above the blurring effects of the atmosphere. Astronauts upgraded its instruments over the years, so its capabilities grew during more than three decades of operation.

Why put a telescope in space

Air distorts and blocks light. By orbiting above the atmosphere, Hubble gets a sharp, steady view of the cosmos.

Named for Edwin Hubble

The telescope honors astronomer Edwin Hubble. Others credited include the astronomer who first proposed a space observatory and the astronauts who serviced it.

Servicing kept it current

Space shuttle crews installed new scientific instruments in a series of servicing missions, which is why Hubble's abilities increased over time rather than fading.

Impact

NASA says Hubble has changed our fundamental understanding of the universe since launch, and it still works alongside newer telescopes like Webb and the upcoming Roman telescope.
