# Harnessing the Universal Geometry of Embeddings

## Summary
vec2vec: translate text embeddings from one model's space into another's with no paired data, no access to the encoder, via a shared latent space learned with adversarial + cycle-consistency losses (inspired by unpaired image translation). Translations preserve geometry and semantics well enough to infer attributes and partially invert text — a security risk for leaked vector DBs (Abstract; §1–3).

## When to apply
- Migrating a vector store between embedding models without re-embedding source text (agent memory, RAG indexes) — experimental.
- Threat modelling: treat embedding vectors as sensitive as the text they encode.

## Procedure
1. Gather unpaired embedding samples from source and target models (different texts are fine).
2. Train vec2vec (adapters into/out of a shared latent, GAN + cycle-consistency + vector-space-preservation losses).
3. Validate on a held-out paired set: mean cosine similarity, top-1 accuracy, mean rank (§3).
4. For security reviews, test zero-shot attribute inference / inversion on translated vectors.

## Costs and limits
- Requires training a GAN-style model per pair; GAN training can be unstable (see paper's discussion).
- Quality varies by model pair; same-backbone attribute inference only comparable to naive baseline.

## Evidence (detail)
- Cosine similarity up to 0.96 to ground-truth target vectors; perfect matching on 8000+ shuffled embeddings (§1, Table results).
- Works across different backbones (e.g. T5-based GTR ↔ BERT-based GTE), where baseline correspondence methods fail on cross-backbone pairs (§1, Fig. 1, App.).
- Translated embeddings leak information for as many as 80% of emails (Enron corpus) and 67% of tweets (§5/§6, inversion results).
