# The Platonic Representation Hypothesis

## Summary
A position paper with supporting experiments: representations in deep nets are converging across models, architectures and even modalities; as vision and language models get larger and more competent, the way they measure distance between datapoints becomes more alike. Authors hypothesise convergence toward a shared statistical model of reality ("platonic representation") and discuss selective pressures (task generality, capacity, simplicity bias) (Abstract; §2–4).

## When to apply
- Background for deciding whether embeddings/representations from different models can be aligned, stitched, or translated (see 2505.12540).
- Not a recipe.

## Procedure
1. Embed the same inputs (e.g. images and their captions) with both models.
2. For each input, find k nearest neighbours in each space; alignment = mean overlap of the neighbour sets (mutual nearest-neighbour metric, §2).
3. Compare across model sizes/competence.

## Costs and limits
- Authors devote §6 to counterexamples and limitations: modalities carry different information; not all domains (e.g. robotics) show convergence yet; results depend on the alignment metric (mutual NN chosen after CKA issues, App.); sociological/hardware biases.
- Hypothesis, not proof.

## Evidence (detail)
- 78 vision models on Places-365: more competent models are more aligned (§3, Fig. 2).
- Language–vision alignment on Wikipedia captions (WIT) grows with LLM performance (§3, Fig. 3).
- More descriptive captions align better with visual representations (§6, Fig. 9, App. E).
