## Summary
Wei, Wang, Schuurmans, Bosma, Ichter, Xia, Chi, Le, and Zhou test a prompting habit they call chain-of-thought: the few examples in the prompt include the intermediate steps, not only the final answer. Across three large models, they report better results on arithmetic, commonsense, and symbolic problems once the model is large enough for that pattern to help. One case they highlight is a 540-billion-parameter model given eight worked examples, which they say reached a new high on the GSM8K math-word set and beat a finetuned GPT-3 setup that used a verifier. This note follows the abstract page only. It does not re-check the paper's tables.

## Why it is here
The library still gets asked how to write a good prompt, and the assistant notes already tell people to ask for reasoning rather than a bare answer. This paper is the sourced description of that worked-example pattern. It is not a claim that one phrase fixes every chat.
