# Topographic maps

**Answer:** A topographic map shows the shape of the land using elevation contour lines: imaginary lines joining points of equal elevation, usually measured from mean sea level. USGS topographic maps also show roads, rivers, lakes, boundaries, place names and other features.

## Reading contours

- Close lines mean steep ground; widely spaced lines mean gentle slopes.

## USGS and mapping

In 1879 the U.S. Geological Survey was given responsibility for mapping the nation and has been the lead federal civilian mapping agency since. Topographic maps remain a signature USGS product.

## Old vs. new

Maps published before 2006 show extra features such as trails, buildings and survey control points. Current US Topo maps and OnDemand Topos are built from The National Map data, and users can choose scale and center the map where they want.
