Use consistent terms rather than different words for the same concept. [S2]

## Checklist
1. [ ] Look for abbreviations that send readers back to earlier pages or an appendix to decode the text. [S1]
2. [ ] Consider a simplified name such as *the committee* instead of an abbreviation; meaningful names help readers remember the subject. [S1]
3. [ ] For abbreviations you cannot avoid, define them at first use. [S1]
Common-usage abbreviations do not need definitions. [S1]
4. [ ] Continue with the same term throughout the material; different terms can confuse the audience. [S2]
5. [ ] Do not substitute synonyms just to make writing interesting; different words can decrease clarity. [S2]

**Done when:** abbreviations make the document easier for users. [S1]
The same term continues throughout the material. [S2]
