# NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF)

**Answer:** The NIST AI RMF is a voluntary framework, released January 26, 2023, to help organizations manage risks that AI poses to individuals, organizations and society, and to build trustworthiness into how AI is designed, developed, used and evaluated.

## How it was made

It was developed over about 18 months through an open, consensus-driven process with drafts for public comment, workshops and more than 240 contributing organizations from industry, academia, civil society and government.

## Companion resources

- **AI RMF Playbook:** suggested actions.
- **Roadmap, Crosswalk and Perspectives.**
- **Trustworthy and Responsible AI Resource Center** (launched March 30, 2023), with use cases.
- **Generative AI Profile (NIST-AI-600-1, July 26, 2024):** risks unique to generative AI and suggested actions.

## Ongoing

In April 2026 NIST released a concept note for an AI RMF profile on trustworthy AI in critical infrastructure.
