# Kelp forests

**Answer:** Kelp are large brown algae (not plants) that grow in cool, shallow, nutrient-rich coastal water, forming underwater forests. Giant kelp can grow up to 18 inches a day, and kelp forests support one of the most diverse communities in the ocean.

## Anatomy

- **Holdfast:** root-like anchor on rocky seafloor.
- **Stipe:** flexible stem.
- **Blades:** leaf-like parts that capture sunlight.
- **Pneumatocysts:** gas bladders that float the blades upward.

There are about 30 kelp species worldwide.

## Where

Mainly temperate coasts, including the Pacific from Alaska to Baja California. National marine sanctuaries such as Monterey Bay and Channel Islands protect large forests.

## Seasons and storms

Like land forests, kelp forests change with the seasons. Storms and events like El Nino can tear kelp loose, leaving a tattered winter forest that regrows.
