# Azure regions and availability zones

**Answer:** Many Azure regions provide availability zones, which are separated groups of datacenters within a region. Each availability zone has independent power, cooling, and networking infrastructure, so that if one zone experiences an outage, regional services, capacity, and high availability are supported by the remaining zones. (S1)

## Regions and geographies

- An Azure region consists of one or more datacenters, connected by a high-capacity, fault-tolerant, low-latency network connection. (S2)
- Every region is contained within a single geography that serves as a fixed data residency boundary. (S2)
- Many regions provide availability zones, and some have a paired region while other regions are nonpaired. (S2)
- Each geography has at least one region equipped with availability zones. (S2)

## Zones

- An availability zone is a logical grouping of one or more physically separate datacenters within a region. (S1)
- Availability zones are typically separated by several kilometers, and usually are within 100 kilometers of each other. (S1)
- Some Azure services automatically use multiple zones, while others require you to configure multiple-zone deployment. (S1)
- Availability zones also provide resilience against smaller-scoped failures, such as a server rack or cluster failure within a zone. (S1)
